The Colony is home to many, many great properties (several of which have already been featured at kymodern) that are always a pleasure to view in person. Several months ago, I had the pleasure to meet the owner of this wonderful Isenhour home on Standish Way. Thom was gracious enough to host Larry Isenhour’s book signing and let the masses stumble around his property and gawk. I know. I stumbled and gawked.

The owner (Thom Smith) also does landscape design and has put his personal touches on the surroundings without detracting from the home. This mid 60s gem demonstrates the next phase in Richard Isenhour’s architecture – drifting from long low ranches into multilevel “block” homes, but still using familiar materials. This one is similar in theme to 341 Jesselin or the great home on Roxburg.

Oh and if you want to see historical pictures of the interior – well, grab a copy of “The Houses of Richard B Isenhour – Mid-Century Modern in Kentucky” (shameless plug for good-guy Larry’s book). It makes a great Christmas gift.

I have a real love for the modest single family home of the 1950s. In the McMansion world of today, it is nice to remember that Lexington still plays host to many gems that may be modest in scale, but not on visual appeal. Just off Southland Drive, turn onto Rainbow Rd and travel mid-block to find mid-century. It’s that easy. The clean lines of this mixed facade home blend well into the traditional ranch houses along the street.
