Ringing in the New Year, we leave midcentury behind for a moment and venture a glimpse into a possible architectural future. This minimalist solar home dubbed the s•ky blue house was built in 2009 as part of a national competition. Interested parties can check out this site to learn more about the awards, construction, and LEED Platinum certification.
The sleek design with its LED lit perforated cement board facade and massive solar panels will appeal to fans of midcentury modern design. A quick peek through the windows at the furnishings will offer glimpses of a few Herman Miller molded plywood chairs, a round molded plywood coffee table and what appears to be a HM Sofa Compact in the living room – all perfectly suited for this home’s small footprint.
This home has toured Washington D.C and was a prominent fixture at the World Equestrian Games. It is currently situated on UK’s campus along the Nicholasville Road corridor just off the UK Farm Road near the Gluck Equine Research Center. Tours have been offered in the past and it will surely be open to the public again at different points in the future as well.
